Bill's Road Diary

The Juke Joints Of Asbury Park ( continued )

Fast Lane
Just a few blocks from the Pony was the Fast Lane. It was long and narrow with a high stage. If you weren't playing the Pony, you were performing at the Fast lane. I remember Letting Bonjovi open for me...boy how times can change. For a while the club rivaled the Pony. It had bleachers and an open dance floor. One of my sax player band mates would catch a movie at the seedy theatre next store before the shows. It was just a skip from Kingsley Ave.

The Pandemonium
The Pandemonium was located on 35..I think in Wall Township. It was a rockin club. James Cotton used to play there with Stomach ( on sax ) along with Charlie Colmese, Kenny Johnson and Matt Murphy. They rocked the house..no one could follow Jimmy Cotton on harp. We became friends and often toured together. Later on, Charlie played in my band. He lived at my house when we recorded Dime Store Heroes. He died one night in a car crash coming home from a gig. I miss him..he was funny and had a huge groove...I credit Jimmy Cotton as being my biggest influence on harmonica. Check out " Blues In My Sleep ", he wails. Both Charlie and Kenny are gone. They played a blues shuffle that no one could follow. Taught me a lot about performing.

Bruce and Steel Mill played there as well and I would often sit in on guitar. Bruce was always welcoming as Danny and Vini were veterans of my band. During this period, I was in Glory Road with Gary, Big Bobby and Dave Sancious.

There are lots more joints and the diary has to include the Student Prince, the Hullabaloo, Big Mans and the Vineyard next.
